Hope and Climate Action (postponed)

Abe Mazliach

11 a.m., August 1, 2021

Note: This Forum was initially scheduled for Sunday, August 1, 2021, but the speaker postponed the talk until Sunday, August 8, 2021.

At this Sunday’s Humanist Forum, Abe Mazliach will discuss “Hope and Climate Action”.

One of the surprising things about the climate crisis is that, despite all the gloom and doom, we could successfully tackle it – if we wanted to. And we wouldn’t have to go live in caves in so doing. In fact, lifestyles would be different; but the quality of our lives and our children’s lives could well be much better. But here’s the thing: we currently lack the necessary political will to act.

In his presentation, Abe will offer perspectives on recent prospects for national legislative action to stabilize the climate. Multiple carbon pricing bills have now been introduced in Congress. But any such legislation needs buy-in from the American people to get enacted and be politically sustainable long-term. Broad public support is the key driver of political will, and depends on what’s done with the revenue that is collected.

The heart of the presentation will be a facilitated discussion where the Humanist Community will weigh in on key policy choices on spending carbon pricing revenue. Their engagement in this participation-style presentation to be an upbeat, enlightening experience for everyone, focusing on climate solution possibilities instead of dwelling in climate gloom and doom.
