The ego is the hardiest of all weeds — Robert Grant, author of Way of the Wound, http://amzn.to/LhZ4TZ

What kind of relationship do you have with your ego? How did you even get to learn that you had one? How do you manage it? Do you manage it? What tools or perspectives do you use?

For the first half of this forum, Humanist Community member Laura Mappin will share her trip in getting in touch with her ego and developing ways to manage it that now work well for her. This trip didn’t involve any religion or other pop self-help methods since she was quite wary of them.

For the second half, attendees will be invited to respond and share their stories along this topic.

John Montgomery

Last year, John Montgomery (a corporate attorney, entrepreneur, leadership consultant, speaker and author) introduced the Humanist Community to the latest evolutionary form of the corporation, the benefit corporation, which is the first corporate form that has a social and environmental conscience in addition to the usual profit oriented one. Benefit corporations have now been adopted by 26 states, DC, and British Columbia , and are being considered by countries in Europe and Latin America . John will discuss this shift in global consciousness in business to a triple bottom line approach – people, planet and profit – and invite you to help co-create a sustainable economic system.

The ideas included in this talk by Arthur Jackson ( Humanist Community member and leader) are part of an article that has been published in “Humanist Perspectives,” the Humanist magazine for Canada. Jackson, who believes that human beings are the source of meaning and value, will draw from ideas in his book, “How to Live the Good Life: A User’s Guide for Modern Humans” which supports this point of view. Jackson assumes that human nature is shaped by our evolutionary past and can best be understood in that context.

Everyone can be an evolutionary leader, and contribute toward the great transition to a better world. We can contribute at the micro, meso, macro levels. Humanism has a lot to contribute toward a cultural-social evolution. Manuel Manga (an organizational consultant, facilitator, and leadership coach) will present his concept of evolutionary leadership, which is democratic, non- hierarchical, collaborative and visionary. This concept is partly inspired by Julian Huxley’s Evolutionary Humanism, which claims that humanity needs a psycho-social evolution.

Consumer Debt, Corporate Profits and Stock Market Value – from 1950 to Present Day

Consumer Debt, Corporate Profits and Stock Market Value – from 1950 to Present Day

Martin Squibbs

Before the 2008 financial shock and stock market crash, our speaker, Martin Squibbs (Humanist Community member and leader) had little knowledge or understanding of our monetary, financial and investment systems. Since then, he has tried to learn about these areas as best he can. During this process, he discovered that consumer debt growth (considering households and government as consumers) can contribute directly, with some delay, to corporate profits and so to stock market value. After analyzing the USA ‘s macro economic history from 1950 to the present day, he concluded this has very likely been the case in the USA to a significant degree since 1980. Thus, he suspects, as we reduce our unsustainable levels of consumer debt growth, it is likely that corporate profits, earnings, and stock market value will be substantially reduced.
