American women comprise no more than 25% of the decision-makers across sectors in the US (e.g., corporate boards and executives, the US Congress, law firm partners).

The U.S. ranks well below many industrialized nations when it come to the status of women and policies that support them.

Why does that matter and what is the U.S. losing by failing to support the advancement of women? What would the country gain if women were full partners in all aspects of work and civic life?

Mary V. Hughes is a political strategist, author, and the architect of the Close the Gap CA campaign, www.closethegapca.org.

The first Renaissance in India came from the urge to win freedom from colonial rule.

After independence the euphoria of freedom quickly disappeared. The onerous task of rebuilding a nation loomed ahead.

Very soon it was found that there were still more enemies to conquer. Not external enemies this time, but internal ones.

The post-independence generation of Indian artists and intellectuals rose to meet the challenge.

Lopa Mukherjee is a writer and documentary film-maker, www.lopamukherjee.com.

Join us as we hear Lopa give this multimedia presentation of these renaissance people.

Tom Manger (the Legislative Chair for the Secular Coalition for California (SCCA), http://states.secular.org/states/california) will speak on secular activism in California, with some discussion of national secular activism (e.g., his work with SecularityUSA, http://www.secularityusa.org). Tom will give a wrap up of 2014 California legislation from a secular perspective. He will also talk about activities planned for 2015 and ways you can assist in not just enforcing the separation of church and state, but in reversing the many ways that religion is unduly privileged in existing laws.

A Nuclear Weapons and WMD-Free Zone in the Middle East ? Prospects and Challenges

A Nuclear Weapons and WMD-Free Zone in the Middle East ? Prospects and Challenges

Jackie Cabasso

June 29, 2014

JackieCabasso (2)Fears and suspicions about weapons of mass destruction have fueled tensions in the Middle East for decades, and a nuclear weapons free zone in the Middle East has been on the United Nations (UN) agenda since 1974. Last December, an unprecedented assembly of current and former members of the Israeli parliament and local and international peace and human rights activists met in Haifa, Israel, to call for a zone free of nuclear weapons and all other weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East and for a world free of nuclear weapons. Jackie Cabasso (Executive Director of the Western States Legal Foundation and a lifetime member of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom) attended the December 2013 Haifa conference and a May 2014 meeting on the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty at UN headquarters, and will discuss these efforts. (Co-sponsored by the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, Peninsula branch – contact person: Lois Salo, lsa1o@aol.com, 650-493-8872.)
